Social media is full of money tips. Some are genuinely smart. Some are dangerous. Today I'm rating seven of the most common viral money tips, from 0 to 10. And the last one sounds completely reasonable.
Which is exactly why it's the most dangerous. Tip one: put your savings into one stock you really believe in. 0 out of 10. Even great companies can fall 80 or 90%, or go bust. And your emergency money should never be in the stock market at all.
Better: one broad ETF holds thousands of companies, so no single one can sink you. Tip two: pay yourself first. Move money to savings and investing on payday, before you spend. 9 out of 10. This is one of the most effective habits there is, because it doesn't rely on willpower.
The only reason it's not a 10: make sure your bills are covered first. Tip three: renting is throwing money away. 4 out of 10. Owning also has costs you never get back: mortgage interest, maintenance, insurance, property taxes, and the costs of buying and selling. Buying can be great, especially if you stay long.
But renting and investing the difference can work too. It depends on your city and your plans. Tip four: go through your subscriptions, and cancel everything you don't use. 8 out of 10. Simple, fast, and it pays you every month.
Just don't expect it to make you rich on its own. It's a start, not a strategy. Tip five: don't invest now. Wait for the next crash, then go all in. 2 out of 10.
Nobody knows when the next crash comes. Markets can rise for years first, and the crash may still leave prices higher than when you started waiting. Better: invest a fixed amount every month. You'll automatically buy more when prices are low. Tip six: everyone needs a side hustle.
5 out of 10. More income helps, but a side hustle can also cost you sleep, health, and time. For many people, asking for a raise or switching jobs pays more per hour. And tip seven, the one that sounds reasonable: if you can borrow at a low interest rate, borrow as much as you can, and invest it. On paper it works: borrow at 4%, earn 7%.
But returns are not guaranteed, and the loan payments are. If the market falls 30%, you still owe the full amount. And if you also lose your job, you may have to sell at the worst moment to pay the loan. 2 out of 10. It sounds smart, it's explained confidently, and it can quietly wreck people.
That's why it's the most dangerous. So, the good ones: pay yourself first, and cancel what you don't use. The ones to skip: one-stock bets, waiting for crashes, and borrowing to invest. What's the worst money tip you've seen online? Tell me in the comments, and I might rate it in part two.
