New to managing your money? Do these five things in this order. Each step links to the video that explains it and, where useful, a calculator.

  1. Find out where your money goes

Before you change anything, track your spending for a month or three. You can't fix leaks you can't see.

  2. Build a buffer

Keep three to six months of essential costs in a separate savings account. This is what stops a broken laptop or a gap between jobs from becoming debt.

  3. Check what you're paying

Fees on funds, pensions and bank products quietly eat tens of thousands over a career. Find them and switch where it makes sense.

  4. Start investing, simply

One or two broad, low-cost index ETFs, bought every month, are enough for most people starting out.

  5. Automate it and leave it alone

Set up automatic transfers on payday, then stop checking every day. Crashes are part of the deal; selling in a panic is the expensive mistake.
